Only about 8 miles east of U.S. Route 6 is Good Shepherd Catholic Church that serves the community. The church is easily found with a cross on top of a steeple that faces the main street. The white church has plenty of street parking. There are two yellow pine doors and the right one has an ornate large metal cross on the front. I entered into a small narthex that was full of bulletins, books, pamphlets and such. Just a few more steps into the church with wood paneling and white ceilings. There were two sections of pews that had a wide center aisle and two smaller side aisles. Side windows were separated by the Stations of the Cross all the way up to the altar area. The altar was adorned in white linen, a beautiful manger, poinsettias and lights. A lovely cross is hanging on the back wall in front of a white curtain and the tabernacle is just to the left and framed with two white poinsettia plants. Further left is a charming Christmas tree, the baptismal font and the Holy Water tank.
Just behind and slightly to the right of the altar table is the seating for the ministers of the mass and the Utah State flag. The pulpit is located just in front of the seating. Additional pews are on the right side room, just to the side of the pulpit. A sacristy room is just beyond the side area and before the religious education rooms.
East Carbon may not be one of your must see places, but if you find yourself on your way to or from Green River or Moab, please consider stopping by and attend mass. You won't be sad you did, because they are very kind and warmly welcome new visitors. Fr. Rafael Murillo and the retired Fr. Donald Hope give great homilies. If you happen to meet Loyola Pacheco, you'll be glad you did. She greeted me as she was setting up for mass and has the nicest personality that draws people into her heart. I believe that angels walk among us. Sometime, we just don't see the wings on their backs!
