It was such a blessing to see that Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was commemorated by people of many faiths praying together for a common cause, to put a stop to racism.
Hundreds of people gathered together on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 7PM. There was a Prayer & Action for an End to Racism at Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Salt Lake City. After four years of spiritual, liturgical and theological studies, fifteen men were Ordained Permanent Deacons by Archbishop John Wester. Each of are bilingual and will serve the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City. Please keep these men and all who serve our Lord in your prayers.
I was recently honored to have partaken in the celebration of the Ordinations of a Deacon and Preist Below is a link to the event that was wonderfully covered by our Intermountain Catholic. http://icatholic.org/article/salt-lake-diocese-celebrates-ordinations-1029067icatholic.org/article/salt-lake-diocese-celebrates-ordinations-1029067

The Diocese of Salt Lake City is geographically the largest diocese in the United States with nearly 85,000 square miles. By comparison, the seven dioceses in the state of New York comprise a total area of 47,246 square miles. - https://www.dioslc.org/images/directory/Diocesan_Directory_Feb-10-2014.195-212.pdf There is a wonderful article written by Beth Griffin in the Neighbors Newsletter from the Fall of 2013 entitled, "Choosing to be Catholic in Utah". I found this informative article on the U.S.C.C.B.'s website and felt the need to share it with you. http://www.usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/catholic-home-missions-appeal/collection/2013/upload/CHMA_2013_4_web.pdf
The builder of seven Utah churches, Father Hyacinth Joseph Valine, was an inspiration and loved by many. He raised the money by farming, catering and making his famous donuts. There is a large wooden cross with a dedication plaque (view below) to the left of Saint Bridget Catholic Church in Milford. A wonderful article can be found by clicking this link: http://www.opwest.org/index.php/about-us/directory-of-deceased/fr-hyacinth-joseph-valine-op Two Catholic Priests played an important part of Uintah County history. Because the first white men in the area were Fathers Dominguez and Escalante who traveled through the Uinta Basin in 1776 searching for a land route to Monterey, California. In his diary Escalante called the basin "a fine plain abounding in pasturage and fertile, arable land, provided it were irrigated." There is a substantial size monument complete with an embossed cross located at an overlook area one end of Starvation Reservoir just off U.S. 40. For more information and an extensive look at Utah's Catholic History, I highly recommend "Salt of the Earth: The History of the Catholic Church in Utah, 1776-2007" written by two beautiful people, Bernice Maher Mooney and Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald. Here's a link for the book: http://www.amazon.com/Salt-Earth-History-Catholic-1776-2007/dp/0874808812
Our Salt Lake City Catholic Diocese has a team of people who are spearheading a pastoral planning process that involves every member of our church in Utah. If you have attended mass in the past 2-3 weeks, chances are very good that your priest or pastoral coordinator has spoken about "Chart our Course" into the future. If you missed out, please go to this link for more details because your opinions count. http://www.prayerfulplanning.com
