Two Catholic Priests played an important part of Uintah County history. Because the first white men in the area were Fathers Dominguez and Escalante who traveled through the Uinta Basin in 1776 searching for a land route to Monterey, California. In his diary Escalante called the basin "a fine plain abounding in pasturage and fertile, arable land, provided it were irrigated." There is a substantial size monument complete with an embossed cross located at an overlook area one end of Starvation Reservoir just off U.S. 40. For more information and an extensive look at Utah's Catholic History, I highly recommend "Salt of the Earth: The History of the Catholic Church in Utah, 1776-2007" written by two beautiful people, Bernice Maher Mooney and Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald. Here's a link for the book: http://www.amazon.com/Salt-Earth-History-Catholic-1776-2007/dp/0874808812
