The Holy Ghost is God and the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. The Holy Ghost is also called the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of God, and the Spirit of Love.  There are seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which perfect certain basic virtues, and they are: wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety and fear of the Lord.  “We ought to pray to and invoke the Holy Spirit, for each one of us greatly needs His protection and His help.” excerpts taken from Section 11 of Divinum illud munus, Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII on the Holy Spirit, 9 May 1897.

Duchesne is located at the junction of the Strawberry and Duchesne Rivers and the west end of the Uintah Basin where weather can be extreme. Today’s mission is on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation and a part of the Ute Indian Tribe.  I was told that the diocese was awarded a 100 year lease from the tribe for this location that was built in 1982.   It was  a blessing to attend the one o’clock mass today at Catholic Mission of the Holy Spirit ∙ 620 Main Street ∙ Duchesne, UT 84021 ∙ Phone: 435 – 722 – 2975.  The quaint white mission is

Today’s Pilgrim Train stopped at an area once known as “Dry Gulch City".  The name was later changed in honor of the President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt.  Located in a dark rust colored brick building with a brown roof that is ready for the winter snow, is Saint Helen Catholic Church ∙ 435 E 200 North ∙ Roosevelt, UT 84066 ∙ Phone: (435) 722-2975 ∙ Website: http://www.parishesonline.com/scripts/hostedsites/Org.asp?ID=2094.

Do you know about Saint Helen?  Mother of St. Constantine the Great and born to parents of humble means, St. Helen was married to Constantius Chlorus who later divorced her in order to further his career.  St. Helen’s mission was to locate the Life-Creating Cross.  After extensive questing, research and prayer, the area was located and the ground began to be excavated. Soon, the Tomb of the Lord was uncovered and not far were the three crosses.  Because she needed to determine which cross was Jesus’, St. Macarius, who was working with

Located about 20 miles from the Colorado border, in the northeastern portion of Utah is Vernal, the largest city in Uintah County.  Just a block off the main road is a beautiful redbrick church and an incredible prayer garden that serves the community.  Saint James the Greater Catholic Church ∙ 138 North 100 West Street ∙ Vernal, UT 84078 ∙ Phone: (435) 789-3016 ∙ Website: http://www.parishesonline.com/scripts/hostedsites/Org.asp?ID=2097

There is ample parking and handicap access to Saint James the Greater Catholic Church.  Just to the left of the front double glass doors are two date markers.  The first one reads, “Praised be the Lord (Ps 18,4a) 50th Anniversary July 25, 1998” and the other ones is “St. James Catholic Church AD 1948”.   Three stained glass windows face the front of the church and a large cross that tops it off.    There is a small foyer that has an abundance of information and stairs that lead up to the balcony and down to the basement where the kitchen and reception area are located.  Entering into the church and immediately to the left is photo of

Did you know that the word "monk" means solidarity?  Ever since the beginning of Christianity, there have been those who have received “the call” to be isolated from the outside world and devote themselves completely to God with prayer and worship.  They take four lifelong vows:   Stability – Promise never to leave the monastic life; Obedience – To God, the Abbot and the rules of the order of the monastery;   Chastity – never to marry; Poverty – Never to possess worldly goods.  A Trappist Monastery is located up Ogden Canyon and nestled in a very peaceful valley.  Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity ∙ 1250 South 9500 East Huntsville, Utah 84317 ∙ Telephone: (801) 745-3784 ∙ Fax: (801) 745-6430 ∙ Website: http://www.holytrinityabbey.org/

There is a beautiful rolling mountain scenery as you rise in elevation and if you attend the 8 0’clock mass as I did, you too will see the breathtaking sunrise.  I highly recommend taking this road trip, along with a picnic to eat after mass at Huntsville State Park next to the lake, or go skiing/snowboarding at Snowbasin Resort.   At the end of a long street is the entrance of the

Founded in 1860 and located up Ogden Canyon is the delightful community of Huntsville.  Just under a mile off of UT-39 is a white mission with a steeple that faces the lake.  Saint Florence Mission ∙ 6461 E Hwy 39 ∙ Huntsville UT 84317 ∙ Phone: 801-399-9531 ∙ Website: http://stflorence.wordpress.com/ Behind the mission is a peaceful meditation area with a beautiful statue of Saint Florence along with a flowers, trees and a bench.

There is plenty of parking both behind and on the side of the mission.  Once inside is a foyer with warm blue walls, are tables on the right side that have papers, registration information, booklets, sign-ups and more.  From the foyer into the next set of doors, you can go either right into the reception area or left to the mission.  I first walked around the reception area to look around and then turned to take photos of the mission.   There are two sections of pews with one main aisle and two side aisles.  Rows of chairs are available behind the pews for any overflow of parishioners.  The pews have crosses on each end that faces the main aisle.  The white walls are adorned with Stations of the Cross evenly divided between the

November 2nd is All Soul's Day and, as Catholics, we commemorate all who have died and now are in Purgatory.  Many churches have books to write your deceased loved one's name down, so that prayers can be said in their honor.  Such a book existed at the mission I attended today as a part of my pilgrimage.  About ninety minutes south to the first territorial capital of Utah where there is a mission that celebrates a bilingual mass at 1pm each Sunday.   Holy Family Catholic Mission ∙ 390 North Main Street ∙ Fillmore UT 84631 ∙ Phone: 435-864-3710.

Only five minutes off of Interstate 15 is Holy Family Mission which has ample parking and easy access, even in bad weather.  The white cross that perches on top of the gable of the brick building, welcomes the community inside.  There is also a bilingual welcome sign just
