“Born in the Azores Islands, Portugal and raised in California, Father Joseph Hyacinth Valine entered the Dominican Order in 1922 and was a member of the first graduating class of St. Thomas College in 1927. After ministering 12 years to Portuguese immigrants in California and Oregon, he was later called to Utah in 1941 by Bishop Duane Hunt. Assigned first to Logan and then to Richfield, Fr. Valine came to Milford in 1947, and remained there actively serving as pastor for 45 years until dying at the age of 95. Renowned as Utah’s “Donut” priest, Father Valine traveled more than 2 million miles across his 31,000 square mile parish while serving Southern Utah’s far flung Catholic community.” – Excerpts taken from the
