Holy Family Mission

November 2nd is All Soul's Day and, as Catholics, we commemorate all who have died and now are in Purgatory.  Many churches have books to write your deceased loved one's name down, so that prayers can be said in their honor.  Such a book existed at the mission I attended today as a part of my pilgrimage.  About ninety minutes south to the first territorial capital of Utah where there is a mission that celebrates a bilingual mass at 1pm each Sunday.   Holy Family Catholic Mission ∙ 390 North Main Street ∙ Fillmore UT 84631 ∙ Phone: 435-864-3710.

Only five minutes off of Interstate 15 is Holy Family Mission which has ample parking and easy access, even in bad weather.  The white cross that perches on top of the gable of the brick building, welcomes the community inside.  There is also a bilingual welcome sign just

above the front door.  Just inside the double doors and off to the right is an almost life-size statue of The Holy Family in ivory tone.  This giant statue was so beautiful that it left me speechless, which takes a lot.  There is one main aisle that leads directly to the altar and two side aisles.  The side walls are adorned with windows, a bulletin board, stations of the cross and lovely prints.

The left corner of the mission was turned into a memorial for today, Dia de los Muertos.  Please let me explain what I know, which isn't much.  November second is the day we honor and remember our dead.  Normally a photo of the deceased member is displayed, we make their favorite food and light a candle.  Their name is added to the list of names to be read during mass for special prayer intention.  A photo is displayed below that shows the beautiful memorial and tribute to their loved ones.

The altar was adorned in white linens because today is the observed day of All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation which was November first and transferred to today, the second.  According to Canon Law 1246.2
The conference of bishops can abolish certain holy days of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday with prior approval of the Apostolic See.  There is a beautiful carved crucifix just behind the altar.  A simple, yet elegant tabernacle is just below and to the left along with the sanctuary lamp which is perched on top of a carved pedestal.  The podium is just to the left of the altar.  One large and two smaller chairs are immediately below the crucifix and the thurible or insense burner on a chain is just to the right of the chairs.   A large print of Our Lady of Guadalupe is just to the right of the altar surrounded by lovely plants and a floral swag.  Off to the left and just below the print is a silver container of Holy Water.

Before mass began, I was warmly greeted by many members of the community who enthusiastically wanted to know who I was and my story.  Father Hernando Diaz and the parishioners of Holy Family Mission in Fillmore are very hospital and welcoming just as our Lord has taught us.
I believe that God led me to your mission to reveal His love to me. Thank you for your hospitality!
