Today's brisk morning was a perfect time for a weekday pilgrimage north. The Pilgrim Train ventured north-east to the 9am mass at a church with a patron saint that reminds me of a day that involves green and pinching. Did you know that St. Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish? Subsequently, the ubiquitous wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs has become a feature of his feast day. The Festival of Patrick is both a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on the 17th of March. It is named after Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland.
