Duchesne is located at the junction of the Strawberry and Duchesne Rivers and the west end of the Uintah Basin where weather can be extreme. Today’s mission is on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation and a part of the Ute Indian Tribe. I was told that the diocese was awarded a 100 year lease from the tribe for this location that was built in 1982. It was a blessing to attend the one o’clock mass today at Catholic Mission of the Holy Spirit ∙ 620 Main Street ∙ Duchesne, UT 84021 ∙ Phone: 435 – 722 – 2975. The quaint white mission is
Immediately inside the door and to the left is a graceful copper angel stoup for Holy Water. Directly to the right of the entrance is an organ along with a tall cabinet for storage. The walls inside are covered with natural pine wood paneling and the knotty look adds to the warm country charm. There are two large windows on each side that allow plenty of light to enter. Above the side windows are the Stations of the Cross which are wooden and in the shape of a cross with carved profile of Jesus’ face on each. There are two sections of comfortable chairs and a long pew. A Paschal candle on a pillar is to the left of the altar alcove along with large print of Jesus that embodies the Holy Spirit. On the opposite side is a built-in corner table which holds the Tabernacle that is draped in a colorful cloth. Along with the tabernacle is the Sanctuary Lamp, a figurine, a print and two small candelabras. There are two ceiling fans with lights for added convenience.
The altar is located in an alcove or an extension of the mission. The altar table is draped in a delicate white cloth with two candles and the Gospel Book on top. In front and slightly to the right of the table is the processional crucifix with the credence table just behind. Father Showri’s chair is behind the altar table and below the windows that feature the Alpha and Omega symbols. Above the chair is a dark brown wooden cross with a delicately carved figure of Jesus.
Coming to Catholic Mission of the Holy Spirit has been a beautiful gift from God. The parishioners and Father Showri are very personable and welcoming. Although not many attending, each parishioner, along with Father Showri, took time to speak with me and welcome me to their home parish. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
